The show, considered the largest architecture, interior design and landscaping exhibition in the Americas, runs June 2 through Aug. 9 at Parque da Água Branca in the western district of São Paulo.

Conceived as an island of comfort, the project includes, in addition to the living room, a bathroom with two stalls. Born from the observation of everyday life, the proposal speaks directly to this year’s edition theme, “Mind & Heart,” which invites participants to rethink the role of spaces from a more sensitive and human perspective.

“Latin America manifests itself as a sensible, everyday presence. His body of work is expressed through organic forms, natural materiality and a close attention to users’ experiences and memories, an aesthetic aligned with the concept of “quiet luxury,” where refinement reveals itself in subtle and sensory ways.

Lucas Carrara is pictured next to an antique set of five Amazonian figures created by indigenous peoples; the colorful painting Men of Clay 44 by MAFENOGFER, which pays tribute to cultural mixing; as well as small tables made of resin and blown glass | Photos: Felipe Cuine

Named emerging designer of the year in 2024 at the ArqDesign show in São José do Rio Preto for the installation “Casa Sayab,” Carrara has since expanded his work in residential projects and collaborations with artists and other creative professionals. The “tramas,” or weaves, represent organization: architecture, fashion, thought that structures and gives shape to space. The “transbordos,” or overflows, are what escapes control: memory, gesture, affection, culture. “These are the layers that shape, clothe the space and build identity,” the architect said. On the idea of overflow, he added: “It is where value stops being imposed and starts being recognized.”

The resin-coated folding metal chair, a symbol of informal Latin American gatherings, sits beside the arched portal clad in algae-green stone leading to the bathroom.| Photos: Felipe Cuine

Displacing value as a central design resource is one of the hallmarks of the installation. Simple, familiar elements are removed from their original context and placed in a new setting, acquiring layers of meaning without losing their affective charge. One of the most expressive examples of this approach is the traditional folding metal chair, a symbol of informal gatherings on the streets and sidewalks of Latin America. In the installation, the piece receives a contemporary reinterpretation: its seat and backrest are coated in polyester resin, work executed by By Poli, resulting in a piece that is at once familiar and entirely new.

A curated collection of memory

Photos: Felipe Cuine

On the two shelves in the space, Carrara assembled a careful selection of ornaments, artworks and books with references to Latin America. The banana plant, a powerful image in the Brazilian imagination, takes center stage in a work by Pakatatu Studio.

Main work: a contemporary stained-glass panel

The centerpiece of the installation, the panel “Onde a Terra Transborda” by visual artist Samia Bilachi, is composed of dozens of hand-painted porcelain plates and functions as a contemporary stained-glass window suspended over a sandblasted glass wall that filters natural light. Gathering representations of botanical elements and quintessentially Brazilian objects such as a clay water filter and a coconut cart, the work also incorporates everyday scenes including a boy kicking a ball and a chair beneath a coconut palm.

“La pared de Papel II” by Paraguayan artist Lilian Camelli; ‘Seashore’ and “Boldo” by Uéslei Fagundes. | Photos: Felipe Cuine

From Galeria Contempo, the space receives “La pared de Papel II,” an acrylic on canvas by Paraguayan artist Lilian Camelli. Alongside it, the duo “Seashore” and “Boldo” by Gaúcho artist Uéslei Fagundes uses materials such as oil and beeswax on crate wood. Taking racial mixing and ancestry as points of departure, “Homens de Barro 44,” painted by the artist MAFENOGFER from the interior of São Paulo state, portrays different peoples, races and cultures through chromatic diversity.

Architecture and fashion as sister languages

A strong presence of wood, combined with the use of textiles and references to the world of fashion, runs through the space with declared intention. For Carrara, architecture and fashion operate on the same territory: both clothe, protect and express belonging. “Each country has its own identity revealed through fabrics and the different ways of dressing,” he said.

Even with a ceiling height of nearly 15 feet, the space conveys warmth through carefully considered choices. The walls feature Carvalho Brun cladding by Duratex in a warm brown tone with well-defined grain. Dark on the ceiling as well, the wood-finish cladding gives way to a lighter version at the center to add visual lightness to the composition.

Between the walls and ceiling of the living room, a draped green fabric lends a sense of shelter, a resource Carrara identifies as a growing trend in both fashion and décor. In the bathroom area, the textile approach returns with burnt-rose velvet covering part of the surfaces, with prints inspired by regional flora.

Lighting, flooring and furniture

The living room composition with a curved green sofa, bordeaux armchair, the pair of oval mirrors “Côncavo e Convexo” by Rodolpho Gutierrez and the draped fabric canopy at ceiling height. | Photos: Felipe Cuine

Indirect, warm lighting featuring natural stone fixtures and an illuminated baseboard deepens the atmosphere of pause the installation proposes. Designed by the architect himself for the show, a floor lamp with an algae-green stone base reinforces the authorial identity of the project. Completing the composition, large-format porcelain tile with an organic shape by Cerâmica Portinari contributes to the visual lightness of the space.

A green sofa and bordeaux armchairs from Casa Verde display a timeless aesthetic within the project’s color palette. Low and compact, the furniture reinforces comfort and well-being. On the armchairs, leather and fabric alternate between seat and backrest in a combination that unites refinement and ease. “The use of dark wood tones aligned with green is a tribute to the natural exuberance of Latin America, especially the Amazon and the diversity of biomes across the continent,” Carrara said.

Positioned beside the curved sofa, a side table in high-temperature ceramics from Juliana Nagle’s “Festas Brasileiras” series functions as both a decorative and practical piece. On the side wall, the pair of mirrors “Côncavo e Convexo” by Rodolpho Gutierrez adds organic forms and sculptural presence to the composition.

A debut with depth

Bathroom stall featuring a sculptural textured-frame mirror, a matte vessel sink on a stone countertop and a floral-print velvet ceiling that references regional flora.
