Where the Border Dissolves <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Lines between art and design have blurred in Brazil’s authorial furniture market in recent years. Sculptural chairs, tables treated as sculptures and lamps that reshape the spaces they occupy are driving so-called collectible design, a movement that brings together fairs, curatorial platforms and galleries around furniture as authorial work. Among the names representing that trend nationally is Minas Gerais-born designer Andr\u00e9 Andrade, founder of Est\u00fadio Rervi since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A Circuit of Gesture <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Fairs dedicated to the segment have consolidated collectible design as its own category on Brazil’s calendar in recent years. MADE, the country’s first fair devoted exclusively to that niche, occupies Arena Pacaembu in S\u00e3o Paulo and runs alongside ArPA, a contemporary art show that gathers Brazilian gallery collections under guest curators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SP-Arte, held at the Bienal Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park, began treating art and design side by side, bringing together national and international galleries, collectors and curators under one program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e3o Paulo Design Week, known as DW, serves as a parallel showcase to the fair circuit. During the event’s week, venues across the city host exhibitions, brand launches and work from new creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, those fairs and themed weeks gave Brazilian authorial furniture its own circuit, now comparable in scale to the collectible-design calendars of cities such as Rotterdam and Brussels. Within that circuit, furniture pieces began trading on narrative value rather than utility alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curators and buyers in the sector said that shift in expectations was the main driver of the segment’s growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry professionals said they were seeing growing interest from buyers in the experiences and stories behind each creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally, design has been described as the outcome of a functional process, a response to a concrete demand. Art, meanwhile, occupies the territory of gesture, expression and provocation. Both languages, however, share the same essential ingredients: materials, narratives and the capacity to move whoever encounters them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Echoes of a Century<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

References from the early 20th century help explain the roots of that convergence. Germany’s Bauhaus school sought to unify art, craft and industry, arguing that useful objects could also be beautiful and lived with daily. Its influence shaped generations of designers worldwide and reached Brazil with its own interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e9rgio Rodrigues stands as a landmark of that tradition in Brazil. In his work, the Rio-born designer paired functional comfort with sculptural, organic forms, features unheard of in national furniture at the time. Lina Bo Bardi followed a similar path with a different focus: her projects showed design could also serve as a social manifesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More recently, brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana pushed that fusion further, dissolving boundaries between art, design and craft in objects that blend everyday materials with industrial processes. Specialists credited the duo with helping consolidate a Brazilian authorial identity within international design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trained at the School of Design at the State University of Minas Gerais, Andrade situates his work within that historical lineage. He said he has carried the craft with him since his earliest exposure to design and seeks, in every piece, a layer of poetry and sculpture that does not deny an object’s original function but wraps it in additional layers of meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Each piece carries a metaphor of a shifting perception,” Andrade said of his creative process. For him, thinking simultaneously about the object and the gesture behind it expands his territorial research, uniting gesture, time and texture as central elements of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, according to the Est\u00fadio Rervi founder, what matters is not separating art from design but identifying the point where the two fields meet, when an object becomes poetry or a subjective gesture takes physical form. That transitional zone, in Andrade’s view, is today the most fertile ground for contemporary Brazilian production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2021, Est\u00fadio Rervi develops authorial work that combines minimalism, material sophistication and a contemporary aesthetic rooted in Brazilian identity. Its output stands out for combining sculptural forms, attention to detail and sensory experience, resulting in furniture that curators described as having a timeless presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With growing recognition in the authorial design scene, Andrade has already received an international award and had his work featured in national and international media outlets. That track record has established the studio as one of the rising names in Brazilian authorial design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on the originality of craftsmanship and the strength of raw material, Est\u00fadio Rervi described its output as an effort to create objects capable of transforming spaces and awakening new perceptions in those who encounter them, a proposition that speaks directly to the broader collectible-design movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
