NEW YORK — A festival joins the cultural calendar. Organized by Artforum, with ARTnews and the New Museum, Art Week NYC offers four days of openings, conversations and itineraries that treat the city as a single exhibition, to be explored on foot.

Here is the premise: when artists, dealers, curators and the public converge, a metropolis of this size can be read as one large show. Coordinated evenings and a curated program aim to establish New York as a hub for contemporary art and culture.
Art Week NYC: one festival, many neighborhoods
Instead of a central venue, Art Week NYC spreads across gallery districts. Opening nights take place in Chelsea, in Tribeca and SoHo, and on Lower East Side, three territories with distinct histories. Chelsea took over SoHo’s commercial role about 30 years ago, while younger spaces continue to move toward downtown Manhattan.
Galleries of various sizes take part, a diversity that Artforum highlights as a strength of New York. Artforum’s program anchors Art Week NYC, expanded by exhibitions, artist talks and special events at museums, as well as activations in selected stores and retail spaces.
Institutions in Art Week NYC’s network
Participants include Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim, Frick Collection, Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum and Studio Museum in Harlem. Its map extends beyond Manhattan: Brooklyn and Queens each host one institution. Together with galleries, these venues turn current exhibitions into stops on a shared itinerary.

Tours led by artists and curators, performances and discussions form a public core of each evening. Promotional imagery, a 2023 piece by Lee Kun-Yong at Pace Gallery, shows a prominent place reserved for live work.

Saturday, Nov. 14, belongs to New Museum, Art Week NYC’s principal institutional partner. Titled “Art and the City” and presented with Artforum, a full day of public programming features five conversations among artists, architects, filmmakers and other voices on art and culture today. Founded in 1977 on Bowery, New Museum focuses on emerging talent, a mission aligned with a festival built around discovery.
Gallery walks and editor-moderated panels fall to ARTnews, which was founded in 1902 and focuses on artist and market issues. In Midtown, an events hub programmed with Art in America adds dialogues with creators, sponsor initiatives and contact with figures from various fields.
Seeing art where it is best viewed
New Museum director Massimiliano Gioni describes Art Week NYC as “a new initiative that brings together the art world,” in a city shaped and transformed by artists throughout its history. Danielle McConnell, publisher of Artforum, credits gallery programs with discovering talent, building careers and advancing debate on contemporary art. She invites people to see works where they are best viewed: in museums and exhibition spaces across New York. Also in New York: Brancusi: The Artist and His Studio, on view at MoMA through Feb. 27, 2027.
